There are a number of organisations that provide information, advice and support on all aspects of domestic solid fuel burning. Nationally, the big players are Defra, HETAS, the Solid Fuel Association and the Guild of Master Sweeps. Here in South Yorkshire, there are over 30 retailers, installers and suppliers of multi-fuel and wood burning stoves who are participating with Fuel Aware.

HETAS is the industry body recognised by Defra to provide assurance to consumers about solid fuel domestic heating appliances, fuels and services. They publish a guide outlining appliances and fuels that can legally be used in smoke control areas. They also maintain a database of registered installers. HETAS registered installers self-certify the competency of the installation with your local authority so you don't have to seek Building Control Consent.

The Solid Fuel Association represents the interests of fuel providers within the solid fuel industry. They provide comprehensive information on types of smokeless fuels available on the market, and can advise over the most appropriate smokeless fuel for your multi-fuel appliance or open fire.

The Guild of Master Sweeps is an industry body which guarantees their members work to a high level of expertise when servicing your chimney flue. They maintain a database of certified chimney sweeps in South Yorkshire.
