A Clearer Future Conference 2008
Over 100 people attended the fourth annual ‘A Clearer Future’ Conference, which took place on 18th and 19th September 2008 at the Royal Victoria Holiday Inn, Sheffield.
This year's conference was expanded into a two-day event and delegates were invited to explore issues around air quality and how this impacts upon health, transport and the urban environment. The Conference, organised by Care4Air, brought together professionals working in Health, Air Quality, Transport, Land Use Planning, Physical Activity, together with community groups and anyone with an interest in the topics, to learn about other initiatives and best practice happening across the UK.
On the first day of the Conference, delegates were treated to a wide range of presentations, which began with a stimulating Keynote Speech from Dr William Bird, Natural England. Attendees also had the chance to hear from NHS Sheffield, with Dr Jeremy Wight delivering an insightful talk entitled, ‘Triple Jeopardy: environmental and health inequalities’, this was followed by an overview of 'Breathing Space - National respiratory rehabilitation programme' by John Radford, NHS Rotherham. Other speakers across the day included; Catheryn Price, CERC; Jamie Wallace, Walkit.com; Stella Bland, CABE; Alan West, Barnsley MBC and Chris Douglas, Transport and Travel Research Ltd; John Hayward, Chesterfield Biogas; Graham Riley, Highways Agency; Andrew Whittles, Cenex; and Robert Vaughan, DEFRA.
The second day of the Conference provided delegates with a great opportunity to hear about examples of best practice taking place across South Yorkshire. This was then followed by round table discussions, where delegates had the chance to discuss three key questions, including; how health, transport and urban planning could combine to achieve common goals; what best practice could support other areas in the delivery of improving air quality for all; using the Care4Air campaign - how can we ensure we reach a wider, more inclusive audience across South Yorkshire.
We would like to thank all speakers, exhibitors and delegates who attended this year's 'A Clearer Future' Conference and contributed to making both days of the event a great success.
