Make A Difference During EU Sustainable Energy Week

January 2008

As part of the European Union (EU) Sustainable Energy Week (28th January – 1st February), South Yorkshire’s Air Quality campaign, Care4Air, is urging people across the region to follow simple tips to help reduce their carbon footprint.

During the week, which is recognised across Europe, Care4Air is highlighting the small changes that you can make to your everyday life to help the environment. These include:

  • Turning off lights, televisions, DVD players, computers and other electrical items when not in use
  • Turning down the central heating slightly (by as little as 1 or 2 degrees)
  • Filling your dish washer and washing machine with a full load, rather than putting on half-loads
  • Filling the kettle with only as much water as you need
  • Going for a run rather than driving to the gym
  • Fitting energy saving light bulbs
  • Car-sharing to work, or for the kids school run, for more information visit www.carsharesouthyorkshire.com
  • Using the bus or a train rather than the car
People from South Yorkshire as well as those from across Europe are being urged to reduce their carbon footprint and help to raise awareness around living more environmentally friendly manner.

Mark Daly, spokesperson for Care4Air, said: “EU Sustainable Energy Week is an ideal opportunity to highlight the many different ways that people can easily make a positive change for the environment. People genuinely don’t realise that these little things, such as leaving lights or the television switched on, can have such damaging effects.”

The EU Sustainable Energy Week is now in it’s second year and is organised by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy and Transport, the European Institutions, the Slovenian Presidency and major stakeholders concerned with sustainable energy.
