CARING FOR AIR AND SAVING MONEY AT CITY CENTRE SUSTAINABLE HOUSING AFFORDABLE WARMTH EVENT ON 21st OCTOBER

October 2009

Care4Air is teaming up with Sheffield City Councils Sustainable Housing Affordable Warmth team (SHAW) at a city centre event designed to show local people how they can keep warm, save money and improve air quality over the winter.

The event will be held in a marquee in Fargate, Sheffield, on Wednesday 21st October, 10 3pm and will be one of many events held as part of Energy Saving Week (19th 25th October). The national awareness-raising week aims to show people how they can save money and become more environmentally-friendly in their day-to-day lives as a result of taking simple measures to reduce energy use and in turn their carbon footprint.

On show will be a bicycle-powered smoothie maker which Care4Air is bringing along to
provide local people with an opportunity to create their own healthy fruit smoothie under their
own steam.

The South Yorkshire based Care4Air campaign will also be providing top tips on how to save energy, money and help the environment including:

  • Turn off lights, televisions, DVD players, computers and other electrical items when not in use
  • Turn down the central heating slightly (by as little as 1 or 2 degrees)
  • Fill your dishwasher and washing machine with a full load
  • Fill the kettle with only as much water as you need
  • Go for a run or bike ride rather than drive to the gym
  • Fit energy saving lightbulbs
  • Carsharing to work, or for the kids school run
  • Use the bus or a train rather than the car
  • Walking as an alternate to driving your car improves your health
as well as improving air quality
  • Care for your car with regular tune-ups, changing the oil and checking tyre inflation this can reduce your cars emissions by more than half

Mark Daly, spokesperson for Care4Air, said: I know as we start moving into the winter months people will begin to turn up the central heating, and with increasing fuel costs it makes sense to think about how we can be more economical. Energy Saving Week is a great platform for us to get energy efficiency messages across to the general public.

I am looking forward to the Energy Saving event and I hope it will give everybody the opportunity to come and ask questions and find out handy hints and tips on how to lower their energy usage at home and at work allowing them to save money.
