South Yorkshire's air quality awareness campaign, Care4Air, is encouraging families to use this year's Walk to School Week (18th - 22nd May 2009) to 'Stop Rolling, Start Strolling'.

Around 50% of children don't walk to school regularly, despite research showing that those that do are more alert when they arrive at school and therefore more ready for learning than children who don't.

Care4Air spokesperson, Mark Daly, said: “In addition to increasing physical activity, travelling to school on foot, rather than taking the car can also help the environment, reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality.

”Through the 'Stop Rolling, Start Strolling' campaign, Care4Air is trying to encourage everyone to leave the car at home for those short, everyday journeys, like the morning school run and so Walk to School Week is the ideal time to get started!”

Gaby Spinks is a Volunteer Walking Bus Co-ordinator for Firs Hill and St. Catherine's schools in Pitsmoor, Sheffield. She is one of several volunteers to help children walk to and from school safely since the scheme started in 2006.

“We often have to explain to people that a walking bus doesn't have wheels, but that children are walked to school by adults” said Gaby

“Every year it's become more popular, with a strong group of children who use the scheme to get to school each day, whether it is because their parents work, have a disability or so they aren't late for school!”
