Sheffield City Centre Celebrates ‘IN TOWN WITHOUT MY CAR DAY'
September 2006
Sheffield joined nearly 1000 other cities, including Madrid, Berlin, Zurich and Stockholm, to celebrate ‘In Town Without My Car Day’ on Friday 22nd September; a Europe-wide campaign that encourages people to use more sustainable forms of transport such as walking, cycling and public transport.

This is the second year running that Sheffield has supported In Town Without My Car Day, which is the culmination of European Mobility Week. Special events took place on Friday 22nd September at the top of Fargate from 8.00am – 2.00pm, with information stalls, prize giveaways, a cycle workshop, and a low emissions bus on show.
Members of the public were able to find out more about transport and environmental issues in the city, and Activity Sheffield also ran walking tours around the city centre during the day, giving an insight into local landmarks, and promoting walking as a great way to get around Sheffield.
In Town Without My Car Day is supported by Care4Air - the South Yorkshire air quality awareness campaign, South Yorkshire Travelwise, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, the University of Sheffield, and Sheffield Hallam University.
Mark Daly of the Care4Air campaign said: “We were delighted to be able to support In Town Without My Car Day for the second year running, and the day was a complete success, with the opportunity to let people know how easy it can be to walk, cycle or use public transport in South Yorkshire.
“This is especially important, as reducing single occupancy car journeys can help improve air quality, as vehicles release harmful emissions into the atmosphere.”
