New Sheffield Air Map First In UK
February 2008
A new website featuring the ‘Sheffield Air Map’, believed to be the first of its kind in the UK, has recently been created through a partnership between the South Yorkshire Air Quality awareness campaign Care4Air, Sheffield City Council and the Sheffield Clean Air Partnership, and developed by marketing agency diva creative.

The Sheffield Air Map (SAM) is a unique website, which allows people to look at air quality recordings taken from close to where they live. The recordings use data collected from diffusion tubes and seven air monitoring sites across the city. The Air Map also incorporates the very latest Google maps technology, which allows visitors to look at the maps through satellite imagery, and in better clarity, with better zoom functions.
SAM has been created in line with Government recommendations on air quality and has been designed to raise awareness about how we can tackle air quality issues. The air monitoring sites test air quality for elements such as nitrogen dioxide and dust, and some test for sulphur dioxide and ozone, which can cause health problems.
The site also features travel plans, which have been designed to help employees get to work in the most eco-friendly way.
SAM is an ongoing project, with data on the site constantly being updated, and future plans for the site include creating a new map marking electric recharging points for electric cars, and liquid petroleum gas (LPG) and bio-fuel filling stations.
Mark Daly, spokesperson for Care4Air said: “The Sheffield Air Map is a fantastic way of clearly viewing the areas of Sheffield with the best and worst air quality levels, which enables us to focus our work on specific areas and model the way in which traffic flow and other factors contribute to the air quality in that particular area. We also hope that the map will raise awareness about the need to improve air quality in Sheffield. People can help to improve air quality by following simple tips such as eco-driving or by using more sustainable methods of transport other than the car, for more tips please visit www.care4air.org”
