Still Time To Be Crowned Air Quality Champ!
July 2008
Calling everyone from Rotherham who is committed to improving the quality of the region’s air, you still have chance to be in the running for a Care4Air Award 2008 and get the recognition that you deserve!
Care4Air, South Yorkshire’s air quality campaign, is reminding all people in South Yorkshire that if they are doing their bit to improve the environment they could be in the running for a Care4Air Award 2008.
The innovative award scheme has been set up to recognise individuals and organisations who have made a significant contribution to improving air quality, which could mean setting up travel plans in local organisations, being more energy efficient, providing community travel schemes for members of the public or for the school run, setting up a school walking bus, setting up car-sharing schemes, promoting cycling as an alternative to using the car, or making significant lifestyle changes to improve air quality (e.g. walking or cycling to work everyday)!
People can nominate under three categories: Individual Award, Community/Education Award and Business Award. A winner will be chosen for each category and then one overall winner will also be chosen for their ‘Outstanding Contribution to Improving Air Quality’.
Entries have been flooding in thick and fast and one entry from Rotherham has set the standards high. The Kiveton and Wales Village Hall in Kiveton Park is an excellent example of a community centre that has been developed to provide an innovative community space that is thought to be the only one of its kind in the UK. The building includes solar panels, thermal pumps for heating, water harvesting system and sun tubes to avoid using lighting power in the day-time. All the curtains and flooring are made from reclaimed sources and an exchange heating system is used to avoid using air conditioning.
The closing date for all entries is 15th August 2008, when Care4Air will narrow the nominees down, before a selected panel of people in the air quality field will decide upon the winners.
The finalists are promised an exciting awards ceremony held at a special venue with a celebrity guest to present the awards.
Councillor Ken Wyatt, Cabinet Member for Cabinet Member for Sustainability and Innovation, said: “We have been giving out Care4Air awards for some time, but now we will be holding an official ceremony to ensure that people who put lots of effort into improving air quality get the recognition they deserve.
“We want to hear from everyone who is contributing to helping us to achieve our goal of improving air quality in Rotherham and across South Yorkshire.”
People can now nominate themselves or anyone who is doing that little bit extra to improve air quality by logging onto www.care4air.org and completing the online nomination form alternatively contact Mark Daly on 0114 273 4655 to request a printed form.
